Philip Jones Sculptor

Biography

I was blessed to grow up in Sydney, Australia and took to creating at a young age.

I developed a real appreciation for the inherent magic of metal, working at Atakliyan Brothers jewellery making gold chains and continued to hone my skills through Tafe engineering and welding courses. In 1999 I graduated properties construction for theatre and film at the National Institute of Dramatic Art where I found my flair for expression and a love of the dramatic an element that I now bring to my sculpting.

I have always relished learning new skills and trying to challenge myself to go further than I thought I could at every turn. I have had many incredible experiences and opportunities, and plenty of surreal moments!

Artists Statement

In this noisy world, the presence of a still and silent object that encourages the viewer to think and feel what they will appeals to me.
I draw upon my experience as a jeweller and a background in the theatre to add intrigue and drama to my work in a style that is simplistic yet full of intricacy; mixing mediums such as glass, stone, wood and precious stones, with well defined form and colour to tell a silent story.

I find the quality of bronze vividly captures my ideas in a way that is significant and contemporary, and savour creating fresh work and discovering new possibilities using such an ancient medium and techniques. Bronze is uncompromising yet it's incredible versatility and durability makes it a perfect medium to convey my ideas in a way that is elegant and robust.
